Lesson 4 A Space for a Family

Today's lesson is also in google presentation format.
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/13OIxcH5FaOFqyWZpp-DMyLAhc1ZTpsiwA_RMkMRAJaQ/edit?usp=sharing

For today's lesson, choose which of the people in your life will be part of your family picture.  It can be just you and one other person you know, or all the people you live with, or all the people you live with plus all your relatives, or it can be people from school or daycare or your neighborhood.

For sketch time, draw yourself and those people.

What do those people like to do?

Here is an artist who made a painting of a family doing the things they like to do.  His name is David P. Bradley and he is from Minnesota.  He is a member of the Blue Earth band of the Chippewa people.

Artist Bio

To be an artist from the Indian world carries with it certain responsibilities.. We have an opportunity to promote Indian truths and at the same time help dispel the myths and stereotypes that are projected upon us.. I consider myself an at-large representative and advocate of the Chippewa people and American Indians in general. It is a responsibility which I do not take lightly.
-David P. Bradley

On your new paper, draw your family doing the things they like to do.
Can you all do the things you like in one place?
Use markers.  Leave some parts of the paper white.

If there is time, we will use water and brushes to blend the marker color like paint.

Next time, we will look at buildings that are for really large groups of people.  Here is a preview:

Here is a video of the top 10 tallest buildings in the world as of 2013:

Top 11 Tallest Buildings

Burj Khalifa, Dubai (829.8 m)

Burj Khalifa (Arabic: برج خليفة‎, "Khalifa tower"), known as Burj Dubai prior to its inauguration, is a skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates,

Taipei 101 (509 m)

Taipei 101, formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, is a landmark skyscraper located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. The building ranked officially as the world's tallest from 2004 until the opening of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai in 2010. In July 2011, the building was awarded LEED Platinum certification, the highest award in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and became the tallest and largest green building in the world.

Lesson 3 Shape and Form

Sketch a building using the templates.  This will be a take-home picture.

Here is a video that shows the shapes of buildings by famous architects.

The ABC of Architects from fedelpeye on Vimeo.

Which shapes do you think would make an interesting building?  Use the templates to draw shapes.

Cut them out.
Put back your scissor.
Put scraps in scrap basket.

Arrange shapes on your paper.

Glue shapes to a background paper.
Use the smallest amount of glue possible for best results.
Wipe glue off the tip of the glue bottle.

What type of building does it look like to you?
Write the purpose of the building on the front.  It is OK to ask for help.

First name, last initial, and homeroom symbol on the back.
 It goes on the rack.

If your collage from last time is done, you have choice time until clean up time.
Hands and table need to be clean in order to have choice time.
Choices are books, free draw, or paper sculpture.

Lesson 2. Space and Purpose

Find your seat.  It might be different than last time.

Last time we imagined changes to the art room.

This time you will draw a picture of yourself presenting your idea.

Sketch directions:  Draw yourself as an architect.

Here are some spaces designed by architects.

Royal Museum, Edinburgh, Scotland                              King's Cross Rail Station, London, England
Renovation by Gareth Hoskins Architects                         Renovation by John McAslan + Partners

Those spaces are not art rooms.  They are spaces that need to be big enough for crowds of people.
What does an art room need?

What if more things were added?

What if this art room had a glass ceiling?    Or an aquarium to look at?    Or a garden?   Or a different overall shape?      Or different tables?    Or a second floor?
Or different chairs?Or a time machine?

Or....?

1. Finish your colored pencil drawing from last time: "My Amazing Art Room"

2. Use glue stick to attach it to a purple paper.  Leave room for your title and to draw yourself.

3. Write your idea on the title paper and use glue stick to attach it to the purple paper.

4. Use construction paper crayons to draw yourself as the architect presenting the idea.

5. Name on the back, homeroom symbol too.

6. Turn it in to the bucket by the window.

7. Choice time choices are to look at a book or draw a picture of your choice to bring home.

Lesson 1 Art Room Space

Always come into the art room quietly and SIT SAFELY.
Look around.
Can you figure out the topic of today's lesson?
Wait for directions.

RESPECT in the art room means...
RESPONSIBLE in the art room means...
SAFE in the art room means...

SKETCH TIME
Draw 9 rectangles in 3 rows.  This will become a floor plan of the art room.

Jobs:

Sketch time is always at least 5 minutes.
Keep adding more details or more color until next direction.
Do not go get more materials.
You can change a mistake into something new.

INFORMATION TIME
Pencils on trays.

Here are some of the things we will learn about this year.
http://www.spicynodes.org/a/2db57158041e4e53dd8477a88c8f0ee7

PRACTICE TIME
On page 9 of the story, it said "Draw or Write about your ideas."  Do that on your sketch paper.
You will get a new paper for the next step.

CREATE TIME
On page 10 of the story, it said "Share your ideas with the people around you".  Each table will need to share an idea with the class.  Each person draws their own vision of the idea.
Use colored pencils and half sheets of paper.
Jobs for create time:

RESPOND, REFINE
There are just a few minutes left to finish today's work.
Ask people around you for suggestions.  How can you use your time to make your work look its best?
RESPOND means look carefully and say something helpful.  REFINE means make it better.

CLEAN UP
It is everyone's job to clean up.  People who got the pencils and colored pencils will put them away.  People who got the paper will help make sure the pencil tray has only pencils and erasers, and the colored pencil bin has only colored pencils.  Are pencil sharpeners back in their spot?  Is there anything on the floor that should not be on the floor?  When clean up is done, sit in your seat and be ready for REVIEW.
*If you are the SCRIBE today, fill out your class sheet and give it to Mrs. Nara when your class lines up.

REVIEW
Time to share what we learned and created.
Listen when it is another student's turn.
Speak in a clear, loud voice when it is your turn.
Mrs. Nara will let you know when it is time to line up.
What number did your class earn today?  Do you know why?
